Carnies & Manatees! / Jan 24, 2023 / $60.00 p/p

Florida is famous for it’s manatees and circus history and on this tour we will explore some of the most unique and lost places to learn this type of Flordia history with our historian Dave Bredemus.

A carney is a carnival worker. In the town of Gibsonton Florida carnival workers of all types settled in their own little world along the banks of the Alafia River.

For those that didn’t quite fit elsewhere Gibsonton was a utopia. It had special zoning to allow residents to keep exotic animals and was home to over 100 self-described human oddities and a thousand carnies. That world is gone but it is remembered and celebrated in a special museum called the Showman Museum of America.
We will visit the Showman Museum on this tour and also the town of Gibsonton Florida and see and hear stories of traveling carnivals, sideshows, circuses and hear stories from the people that did the hard work to make it happen. This museum is like no other in the world and a beautiful new building houses artifacts, photographs, memorabilia and everything imaginable connected with a carnival truly unique.
We will enjoy a wonderful lunch (on your own) at Fred’s Market Buffet in Riverview, Florida.
January is the best time to see manatees in Florida. We will go and visit probably the best site and museum to see Florida’s manatees, the Viewing Center at Apollo Beach Florida Tampa Electric. You will have time to see the manatees individually or in groups from many different angles and locations. The site also has an educational component and museum to visit and a ray tank to see these fish up close.

January is the best time to see manatees and it is also the best time of year to pick up Florida citrus and we will stop on the way home at Dooley’s Groves to see it’s crop during it’s 55th season of growing citrus. Available will be tangerines, red grapefruit, navel and honeybell oranges!
